Bend, Don’t Break – Modifications Are COOL!

Adding modifications to your power yoga flow is a great way to ease yourself into a more aerobic style of power yoga. Additionally, adding in modifications when you are recovering (or preventing) an injury is the best way to workout while still being safe. Listening to your body and knowing when to modify yoga poses is crucial for a long lasting & healthy yoga practice.  Modifications throughout your power yoga flow may be needed to reduce or protect a current or chronic injury or problem area, no matter where you are in your yoga practice.

As power yoga instructors, we’ve noticed students will sometimes overexert themselves into a place of discomfort and unease. Often, students are embarrassed to modify their poses in an effort to keep up with the rest of the class. In reality, modifications used throughout your flow may be the cool thing!

Modifications Can Lead to a Healthier and More Advanced Yoga Practice

As teachers, and especially as Bulldog Leaders, we see the drive and determination in you and we love that & want that to thrive. However, we also want you to enjoy all of the health benefits that each pose and movement brings. In fact, sometimes modifications are required to reap the best rewards during power yoga flows.

According to the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there are some health conditions that may call for modifications in yoga including pre existing injuries, such as knee or hip injuries, lumbar spine disease, severe high blood pressure, balance issues, and glaucoma.

With modifications and proper alignment, your poses will actually improve & you also may see increased muscle strength. So, it’s a win-win! Better yet, you may transition out of these modifications in no time and not need them at all. Either way, knowing how to modify poses when necessary is crucial to your practice.

Power yoga may sound advanced, but it’s truly not!  Power yoga is designed to be accessible to everyone here at Bulldog.  We encourage you to try it but start with modifications!
